Before hiring a babysitter in Garraf, discuss three things: the work involved, their experience and the terms of the arrangement. These questions work for an occasional afternoon or a regular after-school booking.
Explain the hours and tasks
Prepare the details the sitter needs to decide whether they can help:
- Number of children and approximate ages.
- Town and area. You can share the full address once you have discussed the arrangement.
- Date, start and finish times, or regular days if you need ongoing help.
- Tasks, such as school pick-up, making a snack, playing or following a bedtime routine.
- Languages spoken at home, if relevant to the care.
For school pick-up, explain where the school is and how permission will be arranged. Agree whether the sitter will also make a snack or take on any other household tasks.
Ask about experience and references
Rather than asking only how long they have been working, discuss situations they might encounter:
- “Have you cared for children this age? What did you do together?”
- “How would you organise an afternoon after school?”
- “What would you do if I was late getting home?”
If they provide references, ask permission to contact them. Ask about their experience with the sitter and the tasks involved.
In Spain, people working regularly with children must provide a certificate relating to sexual offences. See the Generalitat’s information (in Spanish). Review the certificate alongside your conversation and reference checks.
Confirm the arrangement before the first day
Put the tasks, hours, total price, travel arrangements and cancellation terms in writing. Ask who is responsible for employment arrangements too.
If you hire the sitter directly as a household employee, you must register them with Social Security, even if they work only a few hours. See the official household employment guide (in Spanish).
An introductory meeting gives you time to ask questions and see how the children interact with the sitter. Agree how long it will last, whether it is paid and who will be there.
For care at night, see what to agree with an overnight babysitter, from your return time to the type of care.
An example of a first enquiry
“I’m looking for a babysitter for two children aged 4 and 7 in Vilanova i la Geltrú, on Tuesdays from 5 to 8 pm. We need school pick-up, a snack and someone to stay with them until I return.”
Those general details are enough to start a conversation. Read about babysitting in Garraf, or request care if you already know the hours you need.
