When looking for overnight help with a newborn, ask about experience with babies that age, the tasks involved and communication with the family. Establish the support you need before discussing a price or a particular night.

Ask about newborn experience

Ask about previous work with babies of a similar age. Useful questions include:

  • What ages have you worked with, and for how long?
  • Which tasks did you handle during the night?
  • What training do you have, and how can it be checked?
  • Can you provide references from families with babies of a similar age?

If your baby needs medical care, ask the paediatric team which professional can provide it.

Agree the tasks and when to call you

Confirm the start and finish times, whether the carer will stay awake and the support you expect, such as nappy changes or help with routines. Agree when parents should be called and who will make decisions.

Agree the help you need during feeds, taking account of your baby’s needs and any professional advice your family has received.

Check the sleeping arrangements

Canal Salut recommends placing babies on their backs in their own cot, on a firm mattress, without pillows, toys or other objects. Discuss these points with anyone caring for your baby and read Canal Salut’s sleep guidance (in Catalan).

Ask the paediatric team about your baby’s sleep, feeding or health.

What to ask for in a quote

Check that it covers hours of active care, tasks, travel, possible extensions and cancellation terms. Confirm who employs the carer and which conditions apply.
