To arrange care for an older adult at home, start by talking to them. Ask what they want to keep doing, what they find difficult and where they would welcome support. Their answers help you look for care that fits their everyday life.
Describe the tasks as well as the hours
“Needs help in the mornings” leaves a lot of questions open. It helps to distinguish between:
- Companionship: conversation, a shared activity or company on a walk.
- Help at home: preparing a meal or helping with a particular routine.
- Accompanying someone out: to an appointment or on an errand.
- Personal hygiene, help with moving or other care needs.
Explain the support needed and ask about experience and training in those tasks. Discuss health needs with the appropriate professionals.
Include their preferences
Ask which language they feel most comfortable speaking, what hours they prefer and which activities they enjoy. Discuss what they want to continue doing independently too. The Generalitat’s Charter of Rights and Duties of Older People (in Catalan) includes their participation in decisions about their care.
If another family member is organising the enquiry, agree who will be the contact and how changes will be communicated. An introductory meeting lets the person receiving support ask questions too.
Confirm days, hours and travel details
Note when help is needed and who is available at other times. Include whether you need occasional or regular support, the town and relevant access details, such as stairs, a lift or the location of the home.
For example: “We’re looking for company for an older adult in Cubelles on Mondays and Wednesdays, 10 am to 1 pm, for conversation and walks. They prefer to speak Catalan.” Start with the general details of the support you need. You can discuss personal information later through an agreed channel.
Check public support options too
For public home support, ask your town’s social services about eligibility and assessment. The Garraf County Council’s home help service (in Catalan) explains access through social services in Canyelles, Cubelles and Olivella.
Put the arrangement in writing
Before care starts, review the tasks, hours, price, cancellation terms and what happens if the carer cannot attend. Confirm who is responsible for employment arrangements.
For a private enquiry, read about support for older adults in Garraf or request care with the tasks and hours you need.
